Description:
Fragments of Light was inspired by my experience of visiting the Grand Prismatic Spring in Wyoming. I was captivated by the extraordinary intensity of its colours, the rising steam and the physical heat of the geothermal landscape.
Created with Powertex, clay and corrugated cardboard on a wooden canvas, the painting translates that experience into a tactile, abstract landscape. A radiant burst of red and orange emerges through layers of cooler blue and turquoise, reflecting the striking contrast of colour I experienced at the spring.
The heavily textured surface is filled with sculptural cracks and organic marks. For me, these cracks speak of the forces that shape both the natural world and our own lives — pressure, change, fragility and resilience. The light emerging through the layers suggests hope and renewal.
Rather than depicting the Grand Prismatic Spring literally, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing before something ancient, powerful and intensely alive — the heat beneath the earth becoming visible through colour, steam and movement.
Fragments of Light is a reminder that even through change and uncertainty, something beautiful can emerge from the layers beneath the surface.
The artwork is painted on all sides, professionally strung and ready to hang.
